Presentation Synopsis: Why the recession has driven more retailers to outsource stocktaking as they target shrink as a way of protecting margin.
Retail Fraud Magazine brings you the very latest intelligence in tackling retail fraud shrinkage. With insightful articles on shrink management technology, HR and legal comment and showcase examples of best practice from around the world.
In August's edition, Retail Fraud published the piece Orridge Launches Taking Stock Forum on their online digital format magazine. The introduction reads: When you are in the business of stocktaking, it is second nature to be able to take stock of all matters relating to loss and shrink and how to manage it. This is particularly the case when you are providing stocktaking as an outsourced function where as independent auditors companies can offer a dispassionate account of profit and loss unsullied by the risk associated with inside collusion dishonest staff who paint a more favourable stock picture to cover their own indiscretions. In other words' going outside for the count prevents retail customers from being out for the count' in terms of stock loss.

In such tense times within the economy, auditors are forcing retailers to carry out stock counts with a third party stocktaker, as they need to diminish the risk by reducing costs and achieving figures which can be replied upon.
These 3rd party providers have to be good and have invested in the latest stocktaking technology to offer reassurance to the retailers that it can deliver accuracy at the right time and the right cost
We often hear auditors use the saying "stock is real. Third party stocktaking suppliers have the knowledge that the information is accurate and has not been tainted. It gives auditors something to rely on as outsourced expertise and technology used day in day out, delivers better results, as opposed to store staff who use the equipment infrequently and most likely have less experience on the counting process. There is also the concern over collusion and impartiality form an in-house count. All in all the outlay we have made in technology has enabled the organisation to demonstrate better return for investment, minimal the cost and capital expenditure.

In August, Orridge published their second press release in The Retail Fraud Magazine.
"Out for the Count" When it comes to the 'crunch' retailers are increasingly outsourcing their stocktaking.
Taking stock of stocktaking has become a critical tool in fighting shrink which is why retailers are outsourcing their stocktaking in record numbers as a direct response to the credit crunch. These are the findings of stocktaking specialist Orridge which has reported record growth in the last year, the biggest in its 162 year history- and it should know as it is in the business of counting! Last year the company which includes many of the UK's and Europe's leading retailers on its books, is on target for a 20% growth on 2006/07. During that period the company, based in Harlow, Essex, counted 693 million items of stock. During the current trading year that figure will be around 750 million...
After a year working with Orridge as acting Finance Director, Philip Wrigley has been appointed as our full-time Finance Director. Philip is a Chartered Accountant and brings a wealth of financial experience from working previously in the UK, USA and Europe.
Orridge exhibited at Retail Solutions with VCS Timeless on the 24th, 25th and 26th June. Retail Solutions is the UK's largest event showcasing a wide range of practical solutions and cutting-edge technology for the retail, hospitality and leisure industries. This year the exhibition was at Excel in London, rather than the usual venue of the NEC Birmingham, the new location proved to be a success.
At the beginning of May, Retail Events launched its first edition of The Retail Fraud Magazine, which circulates in the UK to over 5000 retailers. Orridge published a press release within this issue, which contained the following information:
Reduce Stock Loss : You can't actually begin to reduce loss until you have accurately measured it and too many retailers have an insufficient grasp of what their real shrink figure is. This is a combination of those who think they know because they want to have faith in their in store counting and measuring processes and those who simply do not want to know. Most fall into the former camp, but even here there are shortcomings, namely accuracy and the independence of the count.
You have to trust your staff, but according to the Global Retail Theft Barometer, internal fraud continues to grow while theft by external customers in on the decrease in most countries. Indeed, in our experience, few retailers can put their hand on their heart and say they are absolutely comfortable with the integrity of the count. At best there could be sloppy procedures caused by staff trying to add stocktaking into their already busy schedules so it is not done properly. At worst there is, in a minority of cases, collusion and conspiracy to cover up their own misdemeanors. Independent counting is growing in importance for this very reason. Last year we counted in excess of 634 million items and we have noted the growing trend toward outsourced stocktaking, both in the UK and overseas with new European retailers now contacting us. This is because retailers are realising that apart from providing greater accuracy, outsourcing frees up staff to get on with the jobs they actually do well selling and customer service.
Keith Gosling - New Look / Peter Davies - Orridge: Present at Retail Fraud
Event On : May, 2008
At this years Retail Fraud, held at The Novotel Hotel in Hammersmith, Keith Gosling (Head of Finance) New Look presented on Orridge's behalf. The presentation provided a valuable insight into "Loss Prevention" and the reasons for outsourced stocktakes.
Keith discussed his views on how in today's economic climate it's even more important that retailers manage their stocks tightly. Regular accurate counting of store stocks by Orridge certainly provides significant assistance in achieving better stock management, both in terms of understanding the net loss to the store (i.e. shrinkage, in its numerous forms) and the gross inaccuracy of the stock file (i.e. at SKU level). Inaccuracies in the stock file occur at all stages of the products' movement cycle, from supplier delivery inaccuracies through to the miss-keying of returned items. When store stock files are accurately updated replenishment instantly improves and increased sales figures are evident thereafter. Therefore, stock counting has a key role to play in retail. By outsourcing to Orridge- a supplier with proven expertise the retailer benefits from Flexibility, integrity and accuracy, all of which are essential, without the cost and labour intensity that is typical of an in-house process.
